KYBELLA INJECTION FOR TREATMENT OF SUBMANDIBUAR FULLNESS (“DOUBLE CHIN”)
KYBELLA is a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat) also called “double chin”.
WHAT IS KYBELLA?
Kybella is a revolutionary new non-surgical treatment specifically designed to melt away submental fullness, the area under the chin. This area is a common concern for many who desire to eliminate what is often referred to as a “double-chin”.
Drs. have been treating this area with submental liposuction for those seeking a more defined chin and jawline. With it’s recent FDA approval, we are excited to now offer Kybella as a non-surgical option.
HOW DOES KYBELLA WORK?
The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, which is naturally found in the body and plays a large role in fat management. When used in Kybella, this acid works safely to literally melt away fat cells by breaking down the membranes. The body’s natural processes then eliminate them completely from the treated area.
It’s important to note that this process is different than traditional weight loss, where fat cell shrink, thus reducing volume, but they are never fully eliminated. Kybella, however, completely destroys those fat cells making it a permanent option for eliminating submental fullness. Without major changes in diet and life style the submental fat will not return.
WHAT CAUSES SUBMENTAL FULLNESS (DOUBLE-CHIN)?
For many, weight gain is a factor while many others find it difficult, if not impossible, to fully lose fat in that area despite maintaining a healthy weight. Submental fullness (or a double-chin) is often genetic, requiring more than diet and exercise for major improvement. Patients feel the lack of definition makes them look older or heavier and experience a boost in self confidence after treatment of this area.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING A KYBELLA TREATMENT?
When you visit New image Med Spa, a detailed assessment will first take place to determine the number of treatments required in the targeted area for fat reduction. If you decide to proceed, your first treatment can be done at that same time or you can come back at a later date if you choose.
Once a treatment plan has been determined and the patient agrees for the treatment, 10-20 small injections of Kybella in the treatment site are expertly done. Making many small injections ensures the product is distributed as evenly as possible so the gradual shrinking of fat cells will not leave a misshaped area. Treatment takes approximately 20-30 minutes.
ARE KYBELLA TREATMENTS PAINFUL?
Patients typically do not feel too much discomfort during Kybella treatments. The needles used are very small and cause a minimal amount of pain.
HOW SOON WILL I SEE RESULTS FROM KYBELLA?
Fat cells begin to dissolve within 10-15 minutes post treatment though it does vary with each individual. And while the process of dissolving fat takes place fairly quickly, the bodies inflammation response to the injection can take 3-4 weeks to subside. Bruising and swelling is common and more involved for those that received a higher dose for more advanced fullness.
HOW MANY KYBELLA TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Most patients will require 2-3 sessions spaced approximately 4-6 weeks apart, though patients with more advanced fullness may require up to 6 treatment sessions. Dr. Sandhu will determine the amount of treatments needed at your initial consultation.
WHAT OTHER OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR SUBMENTAL FAT?
Submental liposuction is a common procedure that Doctors performs alone or in conjunction with other procedures, such as facelift surgery or a chin implant. In certain circumstances, more than fat reduction is required as the skin loses elasticity over time, which is why often lifting and tightening of the skin in conjunction with fat removal is recommended.
Other options are CoolSculpting, Sculpsure.
This can be determined at your initial consultation.
IS KYBELLA SAFE?
Kybella has been extensively studied and was found comparable to other cosmetic injectables, such as dermal fillers and botox as far as safety is concerned. The leading FDA Medical Advisory Committee unanimously approved the treatment of Kybella for submental fullness following a thorough review of the clinical data. While injections are safe, it’s important to only be treated by someone with extensive experience with the nerves and anatomy of the face as an injection too close to the marginal mandibular nerve could cause a temporary injury that would affect the the appearance of the mouth.
CAN KYBELLA BE USED BY ANYONE?
It is also important to see someone specialized in the face to determine whether or not you are a candidate Kybella. Patients with previous facial surgery may or may not be approved for Kybella. Other contraindications include patients who have difficulty swallowing, bleeding problems, or medications conditions that might affect the face and neck.
WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS OF KYBELLA INJECTON?
The most commonly reported adverse reactions in clinical trials were: Injection site edema/swelling, hematoma/bruising, pain, numbness, erythema and induration.
Very rarely nerve injury leading to numbness and muscle weakness, Dyspahgia or difficulty swallowing, and injection site hematoma or bleeding /bruising can be seen. Most of these side effects resolved spontaneously.
